Sony 70-200 F4 FE Lens

Had a very quick play with the new 70-200 F4 lens today. This is the first production model I have seen. First impressions are, its a lot heavier then I expected. But it sure is beautifully made!

I took a few quick shots on the A7r mainly to test it at the long end and wide open which is where I see a lot of use for this type of lens. Well Im pretty disappointed to say the least! Im not sure if this is sample specific but it just doesnt look sharp. Seems to look like camera shake but 1 of them is shot at 1/1250th! Heres a couple of raws for you anyway.... Maybe Ill have to try out the next one...

  1. 1/250th is really inadequate on a huge MP full frame sensor. Were you using IS?

    1. No it is NOT inadequate on a full frame sensor. Ive used full frame since the beginning with multiple different 70-200'w with and without I.S and its never been a problem. Further more, wide open shots show exactly the same issues at 1/1250th.

  2. Could you maybe try it with OSS turned off?
I read on photoclubalpha that some of this shutter shock problem is related to the OSS system.

    1. When I get another sample I will try with and without I.S. So far Id say the lens is not up to what every other manufacturer can achieve with a 70-200. Ive used my Canon 70-200's with adaptor on the A7r and it was awesome file quality.

  3. Hey, I think your blog might be having browser compatibility issues.

When I look at your website in Ie, it looks fine but when opening in Internet Explorer,
it has some overlapping. I just wanted to give you a quick heads up!
    Other then that, terrific blog!

  4. Been a while, so don't know if you are still looking at these older comments. I've had the lens for a while, and it was always great at the short end and a lot less great at the long. Well, I changed from the A7r to the A7rII and the long end now just sparkles. Shutter shock on the old one? Edges at 200 are the worst thing about it, but no worse that other top 70-200s...

  5. I agree with your comments. Getting the A7rII has made longer focal lengths finally usable. Thanks for checking in! :-)
